Elevate simple onions with butter and herbs for a luscious, aromatic side dish.
Ingredients
- 3 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (or olive oil)
- 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped (or ½ teaspoon dried)
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped (or ½ teaspoon dried)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: Grated cheese for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook until they are soft and turn a light golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped herbs and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Transfer the onion mixture to a baking dish, spreading it evenly. If desired, sprinkle grated cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned on top.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, consider caramelizing the onions a bit longer. This dish pairs beautifully with roasted meats or can be enjoyed atop creamy polenta.
