A comforting dish featuring creamy layers of thinly sliced potatoes, baked with savory onions and rich cheeses.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or any melting cheese)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, sautéing until they’re softened and fragrant.
- Combine the heavy cream, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Stir in half of the cheeses.
- Butter a baking dish lightly, then layer half of the potatoes evenly across the bottom. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the sautéed onions and garlic.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and onions.
- Dot the top with the remaining butter and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 45 minutes, then remove the foil and sprinkle the last of the cheese on top. Continue baking for another 15 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, replace the cream with a dairy-free alternative. Experiment with different cheese blends for varied flavors.
