Description
A comforting and traditional Southern dish made with black eyed peas, believed to bring good luck.
Ingredients
- 1 cup dried black eyed peas
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- Optional: chicken or vegetable broth, garlic powder, onion powder
Instructions
- Soak the black eyed peas overnight in plenty of water.
- Drain and rinse the peas, then transfer them to a pot.
- Pour in fresh water, enough to cover the peas, and bring to a rolling boil.
- Lower the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook until tender, usually between 1 to 2 hours.
- Season with salt and pepper before serving.
- Serve warm and enjoy.
Notes
For added flavor, sauté onions and garlic before adding peas. You can also add a smoked ham hock or bacon for a smoky flavor.
