Description

A comforting and traditional Southern dish made with black eyed peas, believed to bring good luck.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried black eyed peas
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Optional: chicken or vegetable broth, garlic powder, onion powder

Instructions

  1. Soak the black eyed peas overnight in plenty of water.
  2. Drain and rinse the peas, then transfer them to a pot.
  3. Pour in fresh water, enough to cover the peas, and bring to a rolling boil.
  4. Lower the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook until tender, usually between 1 to 2 hours.
  5. Season with salt and pepper before serving.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

For added flavor, sauté onions and garlic before adding peas. You can also add a smoked ham hock or bacon for a smoky flavor.
