Description

A comforting Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and ham hock, perfect for cozy dinners or festive celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried black-eyed peas
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 smoked ham hock or 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Rinse the black-eyed peas, picking out any debris.
  2. In a large pot, combine the peas, water, diced onion, minced garlic, ham hock (or bacon), salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and bay leaf.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cover and cook for 1 to 1.5 hours, occasionally stirring until the peas are tender.
  6. After cooking, remove the bay leaf and ham hock if used. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth and omit the ham hock. Soaking the peas overnight can enhance their texture and reduce cooking time.
