Description
A warm and comforting baked custard dish made with soft bread, perfect for brunch or holidays.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf of bread (challah or brioche works well)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup sugar (brown sugar adds a touch of caramel flavor)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Butter (for greasing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a baking dish.
- Tear the bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in the dish.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
- Allow to sit for about 10 minutes for the bread to absorb the liquid.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
- Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For best flavor, use day-old bread or lightly toast it before soaking.
